John's Story: “I really never thought this was possible.”
“I’m really finding peace in my life.”
★ John, Hub Volunteer
When John first came to the Hub, life felt overwhelming. He describes it as:
“Homeless, illness, fear, anxiety, no friends, no money, crime, alcoholism and addiction… no hope, no love, no one.”
In the early days, the Hub became a place of safety and support:
“A safe place to go, food, connections, friendly faces, laughter, understanding, acceptance…”
Little by little, things began to change.
“My life in such a quick time has turned around so much.
Community is a very big part for me. It seems it was something I was always looking for and now I feel like I’ve found my place.”
Over time, John’s role at the Hub has changed too. What started as receiving support has gradually turned into giving back.
“I was a client at first… now I help out when I can, with training also I can greet newcomers… I really do feel quite useful at times with my life experience.”
Recovery has also opened doors to new experiences and opportunities along the way. John has taken part in recovery courses, mindfulness and breathwork groups, joined choirs, appeared in podcasts and a documentary, and even reconnected with his cat.
“There are so many things to be grateful for but mainly joy. I really never thought this was possible.
I have love, friendship, opportunities, knowledge and a very big sense of gratitude for everyday.
I’m really finding peace in my life.
Every day is different but every day is a chance to live and grow.”
