Ben's Story: “It’s the sense of community”
“Helping others is a massive part of what keeps me sober”
★ Ben, Hub Volunteer
So how has Kennedy Street helped you in your recovery?
“In lots of different ways, but primarily it’s the sense of community.
Going to fellowship meetings is all very good and well—that’s what got me sober.
That is what continues to keep me sober.
But being able to come here, having a safe space to talk with like-minded people, and having support available before and after the meetings is very important for me.
It’s a place that I can come to if I don’t want to go straight home, or if I’m stuck with something to do.”
Ben also described how quickly he felt he belonged:
“It was a supportive, welcoming environment from the moment that I walked through the door.
I volunteered as soon as I was able to. I started with one day and I’m now doing four.
It allows me to help others. To help the newcomer. To help the people walking through the door.
That’s a massive part of what keeps me sober.
The groups we run are a big part of my recovery too. Things like Recovery Talks are always interesting—hearing different points of view, different stories from various fellowships and of all walks of recovery.
The main thing I guess is the supportiveness you feel, the kind of family and community atmosphere that you get. Just knowing there’s a place to come when I’m feeling however really… I can come and sit here and just relax and be me.
And don’t forget the free cake!”
